RECOVERABLE SEWN OR RUBBER END FILTER ELEMENTS.

Classic radial fin textile media elements are unsurpassed for low ΔP, dirt holding capacity and efficiency. They stop particulates before they can move downstream. Unlike PVC, our urethane rubber ends have no phthalate elastomers or other plasticizers. Dozens of alternative filter media are available for services having finer micron retentions, elevated temperatures and/or aggressive chemistry.

QUICK-OPENING CLOSURES

A hinged swing bolt closure is standard on models R20-0200 and larger. These closures allow quick, easy access to the filter element, which reduces maintenance times and cost.

FILTER HOUSING (VESSEL) OPTIONS

In-line NPT or CL-150 raised face flange (RFSO) connections are standard. Alternative orientations, sizes, or connection types are available upon request. Models R20-0202-RF-30 and larger include 18″ support legs. While our standard line of filter vessels provides a starting point, our core business is designing vessels specifically to fit the customer’s application. Changes may include special finishes, additional NDE/testing requirements, adding/moving connections, providing ancillary equipment, or dealing with space limitations. Please send us your specifications and application details so we can make the best possible recommendation. (See product sheet for vessel quotation worksheet)

MOLDED END ELEMENTS

• Rugged self-sealing polyurethane ends – not plastisol (PVC)
o No bypass or cracking with age
• Textile media – not paper
o Handles moisture, vibration, and abuse
• Genuinely cleanable
o Practical & economical
• Exceptional performance
o Lower ΔP and longer life
More than 50 years ago, molded end filter elements challenged the worst of punishments in industrial and military services. Today, with synthetic rubber ends, they are still arguably the finest air/gas filters ever made.

RUGGED CONSTRUCTION

Standard construction includes solid rubber (polyurethane) ends, heavy-duty perforated metal center cores, and radial pleated filter media jacketed with woven wire screen. This screen jacket holds fins open, greatly improving flow capacity, service life, and durability. Textile media are well known for superior performance and clean-ability vs. fragile paper media. This industrial grade construction has been long proven to yield higher flows, longer life, and lower ΔP.

POLYURETHANE MOLDED ENDS

The filter media, support screens, and element cores are bonded together by the polyurethane end seals. Our polyurethane is much more rugged and durable than lesser polyvinyl elastomers used by others. It will not crumble in service as under-cured PVC can. PVC is as much as 50% plastisizer. When this plastisizer evaporates, PVC ends can crack and fail.
Production molds are carved from solid stock (no stampings) for exacting end seals. These seals stop dirt and resist most oils, solvents, moisture, or vibrational punishment. They can withstand continuous service to 200° F.

Options

Core & Wire – Center core material options include carbon steel, 304SS, 316SS, or electro galvanized expanded metal. Thicknesses up to 11 gauge can be selected for high collapse/burst pressure requirements. The standard woven wire support is epoxy coated aluminum, but 304SS, 316SS, and galvanized support screen is also available.
Filter Media – Our standard media is 10 µm polyester felt, but dozens of media options are available for particulate or coalescing applications. Efficiencies vary from 750 µm down to 0.1 µm.
End Seals – Other end seal options include black PVC, oil and gas resistant PVC, white PVC (for use in processes related to food), and silicone RTV good to 500° F. For high-heat and chemically aggressive applications, metal end designs are available with special potting and gasket materia

SEWN END FILTER ELEMENTS

Sewn End Style – Cylindrical, Double Open Ended (DOE) with attached textile gasket seal, perforated steel center core. Filter media is sewn or bonded over a pleated woven wire cage. The large sewn end filter shown has an optional backwash screen banded to the exterior of the filter media. Shawndra’s Sewn End Style Filter Elements have rugged metal baskets and hand sewn media in a design that has been proven over decades. These elements are constructed entirely from metal and textile media without any potting material or synthetic end seals. They can endure service in aggressive chemistries and/or high temperatures that molded end elements, or some adhesives used in metal ended filters, could not withstand.
However, with the newest Polyurethanes now being used by Shawndra, molded ends can replace sewn end elements for most common services at a fraction of the cost.

OPTIONS

Core – The standard center core is perforated carbon steel (corrosion inhibited) but other material options included 304SS, 316SS, or electro galvanized expanded metal. Thicknesses up to 11 gauge can be selected for high collapse pressure requirements. Large elements have solid steel support rings and welded lift lugs to assist in handling.
Wire – The standard woven to width wire support is epoxy coated aluminum, but 304SS, 316SS and galvanized support screen are also available.
Filter Media – The standard media is 10 µm polyester felt, but alternative options cover a full spectrum of chemical resistances with particle retentions down to 1 µm and service to 700°F.
End Seals – Standard elements incorporate glued felt end gaskets (300°F max) but other options are available to meet chemical compatibility and high temperature requirements.
Size – Typical sizes include overall heights to 40″, outside diameters to 36″, and inside diameters from 1″ to 30″. If you need a larger element, please contact us for a custom quotation.
Sewn end filters may also have optional backwash screen (BK, BN) and/or fin spacers (HK, FK, FN, HN). Backwash screen is useful if the fluid flow is ever reversed to clean and extend the service life. For top performance, we pleat backwash screen to full height and full fin depths. Fin spacers are corrugated metal strips placed within the interior pocket of each pleat to promote flow in high pressure differential or liquid service.

COALESCING FILTER ELEMENTS

Access Handles Standard on Models with OD 12″ and greater.
Before and after, shows one of our coalescing elements and the pipe scale and dirt it filtered out of an air line. (Coalescing flow is inside to outside) At right is a new element ready to go into service.
Sparks™ filters coalescing elements can eliminate mists and particulates from your air/gas pipelines. We offer several media options that are up to 98% efficient down to 0.1 Microns. We also offer media and core options that are compatible in environments with more aggressive chemistry.

SMOKE/MIST ELIMINATORS

These filter elements directly replace the non-pleated elements offered by others. They are intended to remove visible mist & smoke from vacuum pump discharges and other pipeline services. They also serve as fine breather elements at compressor, turbine or other tank reservoir vents. We offer not only this concentric cylinder design, but also the higher performance newer low ΔP extended area units. …see our series H filter housings on page 28. The modern mist eliminators (elements shown immediately above) offer smoke and mist elimination in a smaller and more efficient size.

WIRE MESH FILTERS

We Call These Bird Screens … When filtration of visible airborne lint and other large particles is all that is required, and little or no ΔP is tolerable, Wire Mesh Filters are commonly used to knock down the boulders. Reportedly, 90+% of particles 10µ and larger are viscously impinged onto the layers of oil wetted crimped wire mesh. (you provide the oil) These elements can be field cleaned and re-oiled. They provide a very minimum degree of filtration. We replace metal ended OEM filters or those with no ends at all with our rugged self gasketing urethane rubber ends at no extra cost. No gaskets to fool with & a nice fit. We can also supply end plates or end caps to meet OEM specifications.
Experience has shown that the air intake filter is perhaps the most important item ensuring the problem free operation of engines, compressors and blowers! Keep in mind that woven wire mesh media is not a very effective filter media. If you’d rather have a real filter with 10µ polyester felt … please call.
